History of Langkawi

Langkawi, an island city in Malaysia has of late emerged as a major tourist attraction for the travelers coming on a tour to the South Eastern part of Asia. The place that is always crowded by tourists today has a long history to narrate to its visitors.

Legends say that Langkawi got its name as this place always had an abundance of eagles. Also as the place always exhibited picturesque beauty, it got the name of Langkawi. Although there are a lot of tales that are narrated regarding the evolution of Langkawi, the most prominent one says that the island was under the kingdom of Kedah for an extremely long period. Then Langkawi came under British rule during colonial period and for a short while, the island was also under Thai rule after World War II. As Langkawi was under Thai rule for some time, the influence of Thai culture can clearly be seen in the place.

After World War II, the island of Langkawi became a home for the pirates of the region. As Langkawi comprised of a number of densely forested islands, it was the most suitable hide out for the pirates. From this place, they could easily continue their ambiguous activities. In the time being, the life in the inhabited part of Langkawi continued to prevail and evolve on a slow pace.

The person who gets the credit for kicking off the development drive in Langkawi was fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohammed. Langkawi took a giant leap towards development when the island of Langkawi was granted a duty free status.
