History of Malacca

The history of Malacca dates back to the 14th century when it was a small fishing village in Malaysia. It was then that Malacca attracted the attention of a Sumatran Hindu prince called Parameswara.

Under him, Malacca became a major trading port for Asians. It attracted traders from the East due to its proximity to the other major trading hubs like India, China and Indonesia.

Malaccan history took a turn when Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho arrived here in 1405 and brought with him hordes of Chinese settlers. Ever since then, the Chinese have has a predominant presence in the country. The culture of Malaysiahas been thus heavily influenced by their customs.

The third ruler of Malacca was Maharaja Mohammad Shah, an Islam convert. He brought Malacca in contact with Islam and made it the state religion.

The Portuguese arrived in Malacca in 1509 seeking wealth of spices. However, they had constant gaffes and fights with the Chinese and other local rulers. After a series of attacks and counter attacks and catastrophic violence, in 1641, Malacca was taken over by the Dutch, who ruled here for more than 150 years.

The British administered all Dutch colonies, including Malacca, after the French occupied Holland in 1795. The history of Malacca states that the British wanted to wipe off the Dutch from the area. This led to massive destruction, which ended when Malacca was permanently ceded to the British in 1824.

Along with Penang and Singapore, Malacca formed the Straits Settlements under the British. However, the state has not been able to grow as much as desired. It was eventually superseded by the more progressive Singapore.

Though Malacca reinvented itself for a brief period of time, it has over the years, become the same quaint and inconspicuous city that is talked about in the history of Malacca.
