Dutch Square, Malacca

The oldest remains of the bygone Dutch period, Dutch Square is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Malacca. Also popularly known as The Stadthuys, Dutch Square, Malacca was the erstwhile headquarters of Dutch administration in the city and enclosed the official quarters of its governors, bureaucrats and other important officers. Dutch Square speaks about the glorious past of the historic city of Malacca and is surely a must visit during your Malacca Malaysia tour.

A perfect example of architecture and masonry skills in the Dutch era, Dutch Square, Malacca is one of the most impressive and well-maintained historic sites in the city despite claiming to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. Standing tall in striking red, its history dates back to the mid-17th century, sometime between 1641 and 1660. It is believed that bricks were imported by the Dutch for the construction of Dutch Square, Malacca that stands atop the ruins of an old Portuguese Fort.

Dutch Square, Malacca also houses the Stadthuys of Malacca (Dutch Town Hall), the former official residence of the Dutch Governor, which has now been converted into a museum. The Historical Museum and Ethnography Museum within the Stadthuys are open to public and exhibit a rich collection of traditional bridal attire of the bygone era and several other intriguing artifacts belonging to the Dutch times.

Dutch Square, Malacca is strategically located in the heart of the city and lies in close proximity to several famous shopping centers and eateries in the city. Mahkota Parade, the most popular shopping and entertainment center in Malacca is situated just minutes away from Dutch Square, Malacca. The major historic attractions of the city like Queen Victoria Fountain built by the British in the early 20th century to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen, Malacca Clock Tower and Christ Church, Malacca are also located in the vicinity of Dutch Square.
