The history of Perak has been highly influenced by the presence of tin deposits in the state. Every ruler who has come here has been allured by the richness of tin.
Perak's history is closely linked with the history of Malacca. In the 16th century, the eldest son of the last sultan of Malacca, Sultan Muzaffar Shah, established his own reign in Perak.
However, the state's richness in tin became its nemesis and it was constantly under the threat of attack. The Dutch tried to barge in during the 17th century, but without result. Then, in 18th century, the Bugis and Siamese tried to establish their dominion.
As per the history of Perak, the state came under British administration after an internal fight amongst the sultan's successors. In 1874, the then sultan Abdullah signed the Pangkor Treaty to accept a British Resident as a consultant.
But, this was not to be. Just one year after the treaty, Abdullah was forcibly made to accept complete British administration. In November 1875, angered Perak chiefs assassinated the then Resident, James WW Birch, at Pasir Salak. As a consequence, Perak's history witnessed a war, which eventually led to British dominion.
Under the new Resident, Perak flourished and the rubber industry grew along with the already prosperous tin industry.
Along with Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan, Perak became a part of the Federated Malay States. According to the history of Perak, the state finally got freedom from the Resident system with the formation of Federation of Malaya in 1948.
When you undertake a tour of Perak, you will learn that richness in minerals has actually shaped the history of Perak.
