One of the popular historical sites in the state of Perak, Kellie's Castle has numerous stories attached with its construction.
Located near Batu Gajah, about 30 minutes from Perak's capital Ipoh, Kellie's Castle is one of the most-visited attractions in Perak. Built by William Kellie Smith, a Scottish rubber tycoon of the 19th century, Kellie's Castle was meant to be his home away home.
Perched atop a hill that was once a rubber estate, Kellie's Castle was reminiscent of Smith's real home in Scotland.
The construction of the Kellie's Castle, Perak began in the year 1915. This unique marvel of architecture was not even completed as construction was halted after Smith's sudden death in 1926.
Smith is known to have been very affable to his Indian workers. Expressing his compassion for them, he built a Hindu shrine in the premises of Kellie's Castle. And, in return, the workers showed their gratitude by erecting his statue in a white suit and hat.
Colored in orange, the ruins of the Kellie's Castle stand dilapidated amidst vast undergrowths. Tourists love coming here on pleasant moonlit nights. The castle, shimmering in the incandescence of the moon, looks absolutely captivating, just like the ones in fairy tales.
Of late, the government of Perak has initiated efforts to revive this splendid structure from the encroaching foliage that'll ruin this place if strict measures are not taken.
