There are a number of festivals in Selangor that are celebrated by people across the state with much joy and gaiety. Among these, the most popular and widely celebrated is Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, the Muslim festival that is observed after 'Ramadan', the month-long fasting period. The festival marks the New Year for the Muslims who gather at the mosques in large numbers for prayers followed by feasts and exchange of gifts.
The Chinese New Year (January/February) is another important festival in Selangor when the entire state rejoices the entry into the lunar New Year and celebrates the occasion by exchanging "angpows" or cash gifts wrapped in red packets that symbolize prosperity. The festival is marked by feasts and lion dances that are believed to ward off evil. The New Year eve witnesses a large number of family reunion dinners that are regarded as a must among the Chinese population in Selangor.
The National Day of Selangor is observed every year on August 31 as a mark of the country's independence. The roads are busy with parades and shows and the various towns and cities across Malaysia are beautifully illuminated.
The Kadazans of Sabah in Selangor celebrate the Harvest Festival with much pomp. This is the time when rice that forms the staple diet of the people is harvested. People across Selangor gather in large numbers to celebrate the occasion by drinking "Tapai", an alcoholic drink prepared from rice wine, and also participate in a number of agricultural shows, buffalo races, cultural performances and local games.
The Hindu festival of Thaipusam in late January or early February is also quite popular in Selangor. The festival marks the birthday of Lord Subramaniam, also called Lord Muruga, and is widely celebrated all over Selangor.
