As stated in the history of Selangor, the state was ruled by the great Malaccan bendahara (chief minister) Tun Perak. After the establishment of Portuguese rule in Malacca, there was quite a tussle for the control of Selangor. Minangkabau settlers and Buginese immigrants aided by the Dutch fought over Selangor.
Finally, in the 18th century, the Buginese established their sultanate in Kuala Selangor. Tin trade in the region boomed for a long period of time, thus attraction numerous traders who eventually settled in the region.
Chinese traders allied with some Selangor chiefs and started their own tin mines at Ampang. The state of Kuala Lumpur (KL) grew out of this area. Thus, the history of Kuala Lumpur is closely related to the history of Selangor.
Friends turned into foes and a civil war broke out between the Chinese communities, Selangor chiefs and locals. This led to the destruction and in due course the end of KL.
In 1874, the British authorities in the region made the sultan accept a British Resident to look after administration. The economy of Selangor prospered substantially during this period, with tin prices swelling like never before.
In 1896, the history of Selangor took its most decisive turn as the state allied with Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang to form the Federated Malay States, which eventually led to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
Selangor has, over the years, progressed more than any other state of Malaysia. On your tour of Malaysia, you will realize that Selangor is the richest and the most urbanized region of the country.
