Cinema in Malaysia started with the screening of Laila Majnun, a renowned Sanskrit play, in 1933. The enthusiastic response of the Malaysian audience to this production prompted the import of equipment from Shanghai and the establishment of a film production company by Run Run Shaw and Run Me Shaw. This was the beginning of Malaysian cinema but there was a huge setback due to the Japanese invasion in 1941 and the World War II in the following years.
In 1947, the Shaw Brothers resumed operations under their production house, Malay Film Production, with a film named 'Singapura Di Waktu Malam' and made several successful films afterwards that were backed by their chain of theatres. P. Ramlee, the legend of Malaysian cinema, was a versatile artist and worked as a comic, dramatist, leading actor, scriptwriter, singer, composer and film director. Several Indian and local directors made successful films and helped in the popularity of cinema of Malaysia. Nusantara Film Company and Cathy-Keris Film Productions are the other production houses that took Malaysian cinema to new heights. During the earlier stage of cinema of Malaysia, black-and-white movies based on folk tales, stage plays, legends and fictional or real historic heroes and events were made. The Merdeka Film Studio opened in Kuala Lumpur in 1961 and is presently the headquarters of the National Film Development Corporation, Malaysia (FINAS). This organization has made several reforms in Malaysia's cinema and set up numerous facilities in order to facilitate film production in Malaysia. In present times, 15 feature films and about 400 television serials are produced in Malaysia every year. 250 excellent movie theatres screen domestic and international films and co-production ventures with foreign film producers are encouraged to gain experience and make improvements in the cinema of Malaysia.
