Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, Singapore

One of the most famous Hindu temples in Singapore, Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple is located on Ceylon Road and is considered to be a prime Singapore attraction.

Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, Singapore was built in the 1850s when a statue of Lord Vinayagar was discovered by the side of a pond. On the banks of this pond stood a beautiful Chempaka tree (known as Senpaga in Tamil). Thus, the temple got its name Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple.

Taking help from Indian workers, a wealthy Tamil merchant Ethirnayagam Pillai built the first structure of Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple in Singapore. A modest abode under the Chempaka tree, the temple had an attap roof.

The Singapore Ceylon Tamils' Association (SCTA), formed in 1909, has been the official caretaker of Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, Singapore since 1923. With generous donations from several households, the temple has added many new shrines in its premises over the years.

A must-see site on Singapore pilgrimage tours, Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple was damaged during the Second World War. After restoration in late 1940s, the temple was upgraded with new halls, kitchens, library, wedding dais and classrooms.

The main hall of Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, Singapore has four granite pillars with eight sculptures each. Thus, there are 32 different statues of Lord Vinayagar here - a specialty not seen even in Indian temples. Colorful murals depicting the life of Lord Vinayagar adorn the walls of the temple.

The dome of Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple of Singapore is known as Ashtalakhsmi Dome because it features paintings of eight different forms of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
