Father Francisco de Silva e Maia is credited with the founding of St. Joseph's Church, Singapore. In 1825, he started the Portuguese Mission on Victoria Street, the location of the church.
St. Joseph's Church is renowned as the first place of catholic worship in Singapore. In 1906, the original church was pulled down. Subsequently, the new St. Joseph's Church was constructed in 1912, replacing the old church building.
