Kampong Glam derives its name from two Malay words - Kampung, meaning 'village' and Glam, a variety of eucalyptus tree found in this region.
As suggested by the history of Singapore, Kampong Glam was chosen to be the seat of the Sultan of Singapore, under the Raffles Plan. The region was also designated to consist of households of various Malay and Arab merchant communities.
With the growth of this suburbia, many Malay settlers moved out and settled down in the neighboring region of Geylang Serai, Singapore. Thus, at present Kampong Glam is dominated by Muslims, especially of Arab origin.
