Hari Raya Haji Festival

One of the most widely observed festivals in Singapore, Hari Raya Haji festival is known as Iduladha in the Islamic world. This festival is also called Hari Raya Korban in many countries.

Hari Raya Haji festival of Singapore is celebrated after two months of Aidilifitri, on the tenth day of Zulhijah, the last month of Muslim calendar. The festival is known as Hari Raya Haji (festival of the pilgrimage) as it marks the end of the sacred Haj pilgrimage.

In the holy land of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, millions of Muslims undertake the Haj pilgrimage, one of the five tenets of Islam. Muslims are bound to perform the Haj at least once in a lifetime, if they have the health and means to do so. Men earn the title of 'Haji' and women 'Hajjah' on completion of the Haj.

Hari Raya Haji Festival is also known as Korban or Qurban as it commemorates the sacrifice made by Prophet Abraham. According to mythology, he had readily agreed to sacrifice his own son Ismail on a demand by God. However, in the end, God spared his son as it was just a test of the prophet's faith.

On the holy occasion of Hari Raya Haji festival in Singapore, the illuminated city presents a splendid picture. Houses and mosques are beautifully decorated with the most opulent and exquisite décor.

Animals like lambs, goats, cows and bulls are sacrificed in mosques after morning prayers. Two thirds of the animal's meat is distributed amongst the poor and needy, and the remaining is given to the devotee who supplies the animal. Though this sacrificial ritual of Hari Raya Haji festival is not a compulsion, it is considered to be obligatory for those who can afford it.

The influx of tourists on Singapore pilgrimage tours witnesses a steep rise as the festival of Hari Raya Haji nears. The magnificent mosques of Singapore are crammed with locals and tourists alike, the latter more than keen on joining in the festivities.
