Thimithi Festival

Thimithi Festival is an annual Hindu festival involving a fire walking ceremony. One of the most important festivals in Singapore, Thimithi is held in the month of Aipasi, which falls between solar months of October and November.

A form of penance or thanksgiving in honor of Draupadi, heroine of the epic Mahabharata, Thimithi is widely celebrated in southern regions of India.

According to Indian mythology, Draupadi has to prove her innocence and fidelity by walking barefoot over hot coals. Thimithi Festival is a test of faith for devotees who walk barefoot over hot coals to honor Draupadi. Defying unbearable heat, devotes walk across a four-meter red-hot coal pit.

Most of the time, people miraculously come out unscathed from this endeavor. However, it is believed that a devotee who's not pure, is most likely to fail this test during Thimithi Festival.

Little India, Singapore is the main center for Thimithi celebrations in this island city. In Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore, festivities begin as early as 2 am, and fire walking starts at 5 pm.

Thimithi festival generates a huge amount of interest amongst Singaporeans and tourists who happen to be on tours of Singapore during this period. Thousands of devotees walk over fire, as a sea of spectators witness their acts.

Many of these are friends and relatives of the devotees. However, most of them are curious onlookers who feel captivated by this unique sight.

After their barefooted walk, devotees wade through a pit full of goat's milk, and rub their feet with powdered turmeric. At the end of Thimithi festival, the complexes of most Hindu temples in Singapore are usually stained with yellow.
