Central Sikh Temple, Singapore

The first gurdwara in Singapore, Central Sikh Temple was established in the year 1912. Catering to the Sikh community in the city - comprising about 15,000 Sikhs - the Central Sikh Temple is considered to be an important site on Singapore pilgrimage tours.

Central Sikh Temple in Singapore is also known as Wada Gurdwara, meaning 'big temple'. Sikh migrants, who served the Straits Settlements police force in the latter part of 19th century, built the Central Sikh Temple of Singapore.

Presently located on Serangoon Road, the Central Sikh Temple has gone through much relocation to facilitate developmental activities. Due to internal conflicts between Sikh communities, the administration of Central Sikh Temple was placed under the control of Queen Street Gurdwara Ordinance in the year 1940.

As disagreements continued, the Singaporean government took over the temple premises to make way for other structures under the urban development programme in 1976. Finally, commemorating the 518th anniversary of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh guru, the all-new Central Sikh Temple, Singapore was opened on Towner Road in November 1987.

Providing food and shelter to pilgrims is an important custom of Sikhs, followed to the core in Central Sikh Temple, Singapore. When you travel to Singapore, you'll be heartened by the amount of welfare activities undertaken by this gurdwara. It is not just a place of worship, it is a vital part of Singapore's hospitality.

As far as architecture is concerned, the design of Central Sikh Temple, Singapore is an effortless blend of modernity and traditionalism. It has a slab tower of seven storeys and a very fascinating gateway. The temple consists of a congregation hall, dining hall, kitchen, tourist rooms and a small dormitory.

The library and museum inside Central Sikh Temple, a very sacred Singapore attraction, are the places where you can learn about Sikhism in detail.
