Istana, Singapore

The official residence and office of the President of Singapore, Istana Singapore is the most well known structure in the country.

Istana - meaning 'palace' in Malay - of Singapore is located on Orchard Road, one of the most-visited Singapore tourist destinations. Housed within a large open compound sprawling across 106 acres, Istana, Singapore the place where the president receives state guests.

As per the history of Singapore, Istana Singapore is built on the estate that was once a part of Mount Sophia's massive nutmeg plantation. In 1867, the British government acquired this land to build the official home of the then British Governor in Singapore.

Eventually, in 1959, after the granting of self-government in Singapore, the Istana was taken over by the Singaporean president. Formerly known as Government House, Istana Singapore was named so after the handover. The mansion has been built on instructions of Sir Henry Saint George Ord.

The Istana Singapore has a neo-Palladian style reminiscent of the 18th century. The house has huge verandahs, louvered windows and paneled doors, resembling a typical Malay house. A 28-meter high tower is the highlight of Istana Singapore. Large verdant gardens adorn this presidential complex.

The compound of Istana Singapore also houses Sri Temasek, official residence of the prime minister, The Annexe, office of the prime minister, The Istana Villa, The Lodge, Marsh Garden, golf course, ponds of lily, graveyard and a Japanese gun presented to Lord Mountbatten after the Japanese surrender in World War II.

One of the most popular Singapore attractions, Istana and its grounds are open to public on five holidays - Lunar New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa, Labor Day and National Day. The Changing of Guards Parade on first Sunday of every month is a much-awaited event for tourists who travel to Singapore.
