The largest Buddhist temple in Singapore, Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery is located on Bright Hill Road. What was initially known as the Phor Kark See Monastery, came to be known as the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery because it was located at Kong Meng San, or the Bright Hill.
During the early part of 19th century, numerous Buddhist monks came to Singapore to propagate Buddhism. Most of these men were without a shelter. In 1921, the Phor Kark See Monastery was built to provide lodging to them, and served as the first traditional Chinese forest monastery in Singapore.
The Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery started off as a small temple, but in due course, grew into a hugely popular monastery. Visitors from faraway nations come here to learn about Buddhism.
Thousands of people have taken refuge in the confines of this monastery. In 1980, the visitors of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery of Singapore donated a total of SGD 5.3 million to put up the Evergreen Bright Hill Home, meant for the helpless and needy.
