The Lau Pa Sat was a simple wooden building in the early 19th century. It was located on the Telok Ayer Bay and hence named so. The first market of Singapore was located on banks of Singapore River. It was later moved to Telok Ayer Street after that land was needed for other commercial uses.
After its opening in 1825, Lau Pa Sat, Singapore was operated over the sea and jetties were used for trade of produce. In 1836, the need for a new and bigger marketplace was felt. Lau Pa Sat was eventually demolished in 1879 when land was being retrieved. However, it was again revived in 1894.
In 1973, Lau Pa Sat was converted into a hawker center and gazetted as a National Monument. It was closed in 1986 to make way for an MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) line and in 1980s, was reconstructed for the last time after tunneling for this line was done with.
Since 1991, Lau Pa Sat, Singapore has been functioning as a festival market, targeting tourists from world over. In due course, the market was once again made into a food center in 1995.
