Singapore Botanic Gardens

Singapore Botanic Gardens is the city's first and oldest botanic garden. A dream of Sir Stamford Raffles, the father of Singapore, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was first established on an experimental basis on Fort Canning Hill, Singapore in 1822.

After Raffles' death in 1829, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was closed due to lack of funding. Eventually, an Agri-Horticultural Society formed the gardens at its present site, in 1859.

Located along Cluny Road, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is spread across 67.3 hectares of verdant lands. It is the only botanic garden in the world that opens from 5 am to 12 midnight everyday. And, what more, you do not need to pay an admission fee for a visit to Singapore Botanic Gardens, except the National Orchid Garden.

The National Orchid Garden is the main attraction of Singapore Botanic Gardens. This three-hectare garden boasts of a collection of more than 1,000 species of orchids. There are various halls and ethnic homes housed in this compound.

A tropical rainforest of six hectares is another attraction of Singapore Botanic Gardens. A sprawling lush area, this rainforest is within the city's limits.

The Evolution Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens depicts the story of plant life on Earth. Spread across 1.5 hectares, it is a must-see site.

The Botanic Gardens, one of the most fascinating Singapore attractions, also houses a Ginger Garden of about one hectare. With various types of gingers and a small waterfall, this place is quite amusing to tourists.

The Botany Center houses a library, breeding center and classrooms meant for students and researchers. The Tanglin Gate at Singapore Botanic Gardens was initially an old cast iron gate. However, it has been beautified with a leaf motif as its main design and painted in silver color.

Symphony, Eco, and Swan Lakes are part of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Various eateries and other public utilities are provided for in the garden.
